Whether it is 100 degrees or absolutely freezing outside, there seems toalways be a line out the door and around the block at Georgetown Cupcake (33rd & M Street). I do love a good cupcake but this whole concept of waiting in line for an hour to pay $3 for a cupcake completely blows my mind. Maybe I am being cynical because I’ve already witnessed the cupcake craze take over New York City, and truly because my heart and my stomach are loyal to Billy’s Bakery on 9th Avenue in Chelsea (cupcakes are $2.25).
Maybe I just don’t get it because I find their cupcakes to be only so-so. I am by no means a cupcake connoisseur (even though I’ve probably tried every kind in NYC… Billy’s, Buttercup, Crumbs, Magnolia) but for me, I think it really comes down to the frosting. I’d rather have buttercream over GC’s cream cheese frosting any day.
What I do love though is the presentation. Each cupcake is simple but beautifully done and the whole pink box concept is great branding (Tiffany’s inspired you think?). While you won’t see me waiting in line since I’d rather save my $$ for new shoes, I do suggest trying them. Let yourself be the judge because as with everything, ‘to each their own’.
The Georgetown Cupcake reality show, DC Cupcakes, airs this Friday, July 16th @ 10pm on TLC. Will you watch…?
