Unfortunately this mistake is made more often than you think… either people don’t realize it’s there or they think it's simply part of the clothing design. The “X” is actually a loose temporary stitch called a basting. It is used to hold together any sort of pleating or back vent/slit (on skirts or coats) so that it stays nice and neat during delivery (factory to store). With a basting stitch, the key word is temporary... and the fact that most basting stitches are white should clearly indicate - that like the price tag - Remove Before Wearing!
